An interview with Sarah, the awesome race car driving chick!

If you've been following the I hate men Group on Facebook, you may have noticed some posts from my friend Sarah Cornett-Ching, the race car driver! As one of the only female drivers out there, Sarah is kicking men's asses and proving just how awesome women are! This qualifies her to be the first women to be interviewed as a role model and inspiration on this blog. :)

Tell us a bit about the kind of races you do, the car you use, etc...

I race in a series that travels across British Columbia and I made my debut in the Nascar Canadian Tire Series this year. The car I race in is a Late Model, nothing about it is stock like a street car. Everything is fabricated and aftermarket. The motors we race make 460 horsepower!

When and why did you start racing?

I started racing when I was 12 years old, I had been helping my dad with his race team for years and had been asking for a race car of my own. One day, he took us to the shop and sitting outside was my first race car. The funny part is my mom and I were both surprised but in different ways! I was excited and happy and my mom was ready to kill my dad for putting her 12 year old daughter in the seat of a race car.

What is the most demanding part?

The most demanding part is because we race almost every week there is a lot of work getting the car ready between races. If we do get involved in an altercation one week we work every night until midnight or later making the car ready to race the next week.

How does it feel to be a girl in such a male-dominated career?

The good and bad side of being a female in the sport is that everything I do is under a magnifying glass. If I do well in a race I get way more attention and media than any other driver. If I crash though it is automatically assumed to be my fault and its said I'm not ready to be racing at the level I'm at etc. Its a double edged sword.

Tell us one great ' I kicked a man's ass' moment.

The best `I kicked a man's ass' story I can think of is the win I got this year, we had a mediocre car that race day and I had made my way up to 2nd place on a restart with 5 laps to go. I made a cross over move and got up along side the leader on the white flag lap ( last lap )and I beat him to the finish line by a car length and got my first win. The best part of the whole thing is that the guy I beat was a two time series Champion and went on to win the top spot again this year.

Tell us something secretly girly about you.

The most girly thing about me is my shoe fetish!! I love shoes I own soo many pairs and I cant stop buying them. I actually like dressing up and being girly but, I am a welder by day and race car driver most of the year so I rarely get the chance to dress up.

Are there a lot of other girls? Any?

There aren't many other girls I race with, this year in the Arca Series I ran I was the only girl but there are a few others who are making their way up the ranks now too. I know I was the inspiration for some of them and I hope to keep inspiring people to try new things and follow their dreams! (even though it sounds corny)

And of course, this is the I Hate Men Club, do you have a story about hating men?

I was once racing towards the end of a race I was running top five and on the restart I got driven right into the side of and got spun out and the car got wrecked I was so mad. Men !!

What have you been up to this year and how can we help you win?

This past year I spent in a racing school called Race 101 in North Carolina. I made trips down South for classes and I also did correspondence classes via the internet weekly. The course taught me so much from marketing to actual tuning and things on the car. Any young driver would benefit from the program. All year everyone in the class has been working towards becoming the Premier Driver for 2012. The winner gets to drive the Race 101 house car in North Carolina for a minimum of 3 races.
